Well, I packed up my 130,000 mile auto, picked up Doug Post, candidate for state District 51, and we hustled way out on Burro Flats to a meeting of Otero County Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) leaders.
They were gracious, receptive and had a number of excellent questions. After Doug and I talked briefly about our campaigns, we responded to the questions. One question was, "It sometimes takes months to get vital equipment requisitions through the County Commissioners. Would you streamline this proces so that VFD requests are taken more seriously?" Of course I would learn the process and then seek to make it work more quickly. But, I also said, "Wouldn't it be a great connection for you folk who voluntarily risk your lives for the rest of us to have an active VFD (I'm a member of the SAC/WEED VFD) on the County Commission and also a friend in the state house from District 51 who shares your concerns?" This idea seemed to strike a good note.
There were also questions related to working more closely with the Forest Service, water, flood, and fire control.
