Before taking some summer family time and checking on my 96 year old Dad in Granbury, Texas, I attended an Otero County Commissioner's public hearing on the Spaceport. I have to say that it was an interesting meeting. There was shouting and whispering; there were near threats and magnanimous support. My statement was the briefest. I recommended that the County Commissioners put the 1/58th of a cent on gross receipts tax on the November ballot--because I trust the voters to do what they determine is best for our county; however, I also stated that in the mean time I needed lots more information about the Southern New Mexico Spaceport.
In general, I believe that technology and scientific exploration are gate-ways to a good future for Otero County. Let’s all take a close look at this Spaceport project and see if our future is benefited by our being part of it from the beginning.
