Good Change for Otero

August 21

At lunch I met with the Alamogordo Ministerial Alliance (I meet with the South Sacramento Mountain Ministerial Alliance regularly in Cloudcroft). I felt a good response from the clergy gathered at Corinth Baptist Church. They all were encouraging.

Six PM found me at the Otero Commission meeting. One thing that impresses me about the commissioners is the way that they talk with each other and with their staff. I have seen some governmental bodies which did not do that in public meeting.

Tonight was another public hearing on the Spaceport; though it really wasn't! The chair of the commission kept reminding "speakers" that the Spaceport itself was not on the agenda. He kept saying that the only thing on the agenda was the resolution/ordinance to put the 1/8th of one percent on gross receipts tax on the November ballot. The commissioners do not tax unless it has been voted by voters. In spite of all, the same people were there on both sides and said exactly the same things that they had said at the public hearing earlier in the summer. What disturbed me was the number of people who did not trust the voters to make the decision based on information and what they considered best for the county. In fact, one person as much as called the voting public too stupid to make such an important decision. Naturally these folk were against the question.

I still say that voters are smart and can get good information and make intelligent decisions on such matters.
