August 26
WOW! is the only word I can think of to describe the National Educators Association (NEA) community meeting in Alamogordo August 26. Here's why I say that: a significant number of folk, including the Alamogordo School Board president, Dr. Michael Harris, gathered at the Corinth Baptist Church. The church's pastor used a slide show to outline what was to be discussed in small groups. We were divided into groups and all given the same task. We ere to discuss issues of accountablity: schools, teachers and administrators, New Mexico Public Education Department, and the community. Secondly we discussed the whole area of school needs--money to get the job done, qualified and well compensated teachers, safety and other matters. And then action items with priorities. All this information, I believe, is to be posted on the NEA WEB site.
It was an excellent eaxample of how good, caring people can gather tgether and work for the common good--in this case education of our chhildren and youth. Thanks to Corinth Church and the Alamogordo NEA for a terrfic session.
